Successful Latin Mass Society AGM and Mass in Westminster Cathedral
The Latin Mass Society held its AGM in Westminster Cathedral Hall in the morning on Saturday 9 June, followed by a High Mass in the Traditional Latin Rite in the Cathedral in the afternoon.
150 LMS members crowded into Westminster Cathedral Hall to hear LMS Chairman, Julian Chadwick, report on another successful and busy year for the Society. The LMS now has assets of almost one million pounds – an astonishing achievement for a Society confidently predicted to die out in a few years when first founded forty years ago. Also, it now runs a professional and confidential information operation in Rome which has given the Vatican an accurate picture of Traditional Mass provision in England and Wales.
The main speaker was Revd Fr John Berg, Superior General of the Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP), one of the main international orders of Traditional priests. He spoke on the rapid growth of the FSSP worldwide and of the growing trend for bishops to give it parishes and churches. He stressed the need for Traditional Catholics to be at the heart of the Church, and not in ghettos; for consistent and orthodox catechesis and pointed to the many young families with many children now flocking to the Traditional Mass.
In the afternoon Fr Antony Conlon, National Chaplain to the LMS, celebrated High Mass at the High Altar in the Cathedral, assisted by Fr Andrew Southwell as Deacon and Revd Laurence Hemming as Sub-deacon. Father Berg preached the sermon and the men of the Cathedral Choir sang. A large congregation assisted and filled the huge Cathedral with sound at the end of the Mass with the Salve Regina.
