Latin Mass Society Celebrates ‘Motu Proprio’ Day
On Friday 14th September Pope Benedict’s recent Motu Proprio, ‘Summorum Pontificum’ which frees the Traditional or ‘Extraordinary’ form of Mass became effective.
To mark the day, the Latin Mass Society facillitated a sumptuous High Mass together with the Te Deum at Brompton Oratory, London on the Friday evening.
The church was packed, the sanctuary was a blaze of vestments and candles, and clouds of incense drifted in the church vaults. The congregation, which included many young people and families, joined the choir in singing the praises of God. The Provost of the Oratory, Fr Ignatius Harrison, preached a sermon calling for the Traditional Rite to retake its proper place in the family of Rites.
After the Mass, at a crowded reception in nearby St Wilfred’s Hall Julian Chadwick, LMS Chairman, thanked the Holy Father for his wise stewardship of the Church and pledged that the LMS would do all in its power to ensure a smooth and trouble-free reintroduction of the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite into all the English and Welsh dioceses.
Elsewhere in the country, the LMS organised nine other Masses and knew of several others being offered privately by parish priests.
Pictures of the Mass can be found on the traditionalcatholic.org.uk web site.
