Westminster Cathedral to Host Motu Proprio Mass

The Latin Mass Society has arranged a major event in Westminster Cathedral, London to celebrate the recent Motu Proprio from Pope Benedict XVI freeing the Traditional Roman Rite.

On Saturday 6 October at 2.00 pm a sumptuous Votive High Mass of the Holy Trinity in the Traditional Usage will be celebrate at the High Altar by Fr Antony Conlon, the LMS’s National Chaplain. He will also preach and the men of the Cathedral Choir will sing. The Mass will be followed by the Te Deum. A large congregation is expected.

John Medlin, General Manager of the LMS, said, “This will not be a triumphalist event but a heartfelt thanksgiving for the Holy Father’s wisdom in issuing his Motu Proprio. Our Masses in the Cathedral are a wonderful affirmation that the position of the Traditional Rite at the heart of the Church and alongside the new rite is assured. We are grateful to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor and Mgr Mark Langham, the Cathedral Administrator, for welcoming us”.

Under a long-standing arrangement first agreed with Cardinal Basil Hume, the LMS organises two High Masses a year and monthly Low Masses in Westminster Cathedral. John Medlin said, “Presumably the Motu Proprio now supersedes this arrangement and we will probably ask for more permissions, but we will wait and see how things settle down.”
