PRESS RELEASE FROM THE LATIN MASS SOCIETY
22 May 2009
Latin Mass Society representatives attend the installation ceremonies for the new Archbishop of Westminster
For the first time in its history, the Latin Mass Society was invited by the Archdiocese of Westminster to send representatives to the Solemn Vespers attended by the Most Revd Vincent Nichols, Archbishop-Elect of Westminster, celebrated in Westminster Cathedral on Wednesday 20 May, and to the Reception, Installation and Pontifical Mass on Thursday 21 May at which Archbishop Nichols was installed as the 11th Archbishop of Westminster.
John Medlin, General Manager of the LMS, attended the Solemn Vespers and Dr Joseph Shaw, Chairman of the LMS, attended the Installation Mass.
As a further sign of the normalisation of those attached to the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite in the life of the Church, an LMS representative was invited to attend the Papal Nuncio’s Reception at Archbishop’s House, Westminster, on Wednesday 22 April to celebrate the 82nd birthday of the Holy Father and to meet Archbishop Nichols. John Medlin, LMS General Manager, attended.
After attending Archbishop Nichols’ Installation Mass on Thursday 21 May, Dr Joseph Shaw said: “The LMS is developing ever closer contacts with the Bishops’ Conference and the Westminster auxiliary bishops in particular. We hope shortly to commence regular meetings with the Bishops’ Conference Department of Christian Life and Worship. This will ensure an ongoing exchange of ideas and information regarding pastoral care in England and Wales for those attached to the Extraordinary Form.”
