Mass Times News General info Links

The Latin Mass Society is a founder member of the International Una Voce Federation. In a message to the Federation dated 25th July 1996 Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, said:

"The International Una Voce Federation has played an important role in supporting the use of the 1962 edition of the Roman Missal in obedience to the directives of the Holy See. For this valuable service I express my gratitude to the members of the Federation and extend my blessing." (Pope Benedict XVI).

Essentially, itis an association of Catholic faithful dedicated to the preservation of the traditional Latin Mass as one of the legitimate forms of the Church's liturgy. Whilst it is composed predominantly of lay members drawn from every age group and walk of life, it also includes a number of priests who wish to minister to all who request access to the former sacramental rites of the Church.

4 I am sorry that the proposed Mass at Postlip had to be cancelled at very short notice because of the floods.

5 In order to save space in future circulars I enclose on a separate sheet details of our regular Masses including, for the first time, Masses in Downend, Bristol and Warminster, Wiltshire. Please keep this sheet for reference and do your best to assist at as many of these Masses as possible. As and when there should be any change a new sheet will be sent to you but the diocesan circular will usually contain only occasional Masses.

6 On a personal note I hand over to Nigel Taylor as from 10th September. My swansong as Diocesan Representative will be the Glastonbury Pilgrimage on 8th September. Nigel's details are on the attached sheet. Please give him all the help and support you can.

7 The sum of £762 being the collections from the weekday Masses, less Mass offerings, for this calendar year to date has been sent to the Society's London office. Many thanks to all who contributed.

News

New Diocesan Representative

As you will know, my term of office expires in September after the Glastonbury Pilgrimage. I am pleased to be able to tell you that the committee has appointed Nigel Taylor, one of our principal servers, to succeed me. We shall be working closely to ensure a smooth transmission. Nigel will need the help and support of everyone, not least in increasing the attendance at our Masses, There is no doubt that times are becoming more favourable and we must redouble our efforts in every way - Charles Atchley (the current representative).

Downside Abbey commence Sunday Masses

I am delighted to be able to tell you that the Abbot of Downside has given permission for a Mass to be celebrated at St Benedict’s Church, Stratton-on-the-Fosse, on the first Sunday of each month at 11.15am with effect from March 4th 2007. The celebrant will be Dom Boniface Hill OSB. Permission has been granted on the understanding that there is a reasonable demand for this Mass. Please do your best to support it. The Mass will complement our monthly Mass at Our Lady’s Church, Glastonbury on the third Sunday.

Prinknash Abbey continue Sunday Masses

There are now Sunday Masses in the main Abbey Church at Prinknash Abbey on the first Sunday of the month. All Sunday Masses start at 3pm. If anyone would be able to offer a lift from Cheltenham for this Mass, please ring Damian Barker on 01452 539503.

Bishop Lang restricts Sunday Masses

I am sorry to have to tell you that, although a priest in the diocese kindly volunteered to offer a regular Sunday Mass for us on the first Sunday of each month, I have been unable to obtain the Bishop’s permission for it. In his letter to me the Bishop tells me that he has been generous in giving permissions for weekdays but he thinks that on Sundays people should attend the modern rite. The clear implication is that if we lose any of our existing Sunday Masses it is unlikely that alternative arrangements will be permitted. Please, therefore, make a special effort to come to our existing Sunday Masses. Use them or lose them - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Regular Prinknash Abbey Masses

We are most grateful to the Abbot (and Community) of Prinknash who has authorised the following:-

a] Mass on the first Sunday of each month in the Abbey Church at 3.00pm.

b] Mass every Saturday at 11.00am in the Abbey Church. These Masses are not organised by the Society
but I would ask all members and friends living in Gloucestershire especially in the
Gloucester/Cheltenham/Stroud areas to support them and make them known to like-minded Catholics.

All enquiries and offers of help (e.g. serving) will be warmly welcomed and should be made to Trefor Jones, Gaudete, The Bluff, Walkley Wood, Nailsworth, Stroud. (tel: 01453 833064).

Oxford Masses

The Oxford Oratory now has Low Mass every Sunday at 8.00am, for more information please visit:-

http://oxfordlmsrep.blogspot.com/2006/05/forthcoming-masses.html

I would like to ask for volunteers:-

a] Both ladies and gentlemen to reinforce the Society’s choir.

b] For gentlemen to help serve at our Masses.

Please do not be deterred if you have no experience in either capacity – training will be offered. You will not be expected too travel all over the diocese but it would help if you could serve or sing within, say, 25 miles of your home - Charles Atchley.

News about the Fraternity of St. Peter

There have been some changes in the membership of the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter in this country.

Fr Paul Carr, with the agreement of Bishop Brain of Salford, has taken up residence in a presbytery in Manchester. Fr Carr, who comes from that part of the world, will be available to say Mass for the Society in the North West. He will be much missed in this diocese and goes with our prayers and good wishes.

Fr Nicholas de Chaxel (FSSP) who was Fr. Carr's replacement has now been joined by Fr. Benjamin Durham (FSSP), both Priests are residing in central London.

General info

News from Charles Atchley your representative

Requiem Masses.

Every Catholic has the right to stipulate that on their death their Requiem Mass shall be said in the traditional Latin Rite. If you wish to ensure that this is done you must:-

a) Tell your next of kin and your executor.
b) Tell your Parish Priest.
c) Mention it in your will or leave a handwritten note to that effect with your will.

In case of difficulty in finding a celebrant, the diocesan representative or an assistant representative should be contacted. I have a supply of plastic cards which record such wishes (which I can supply on request) and should be kept in a wallet or purse.

P.S. Requests for the newsletter to be sent by e-mail should be made direct to mike@mjray.fsnet.co.uk

New traditional Young Catholic Adult group goes online.

Many groups involving younger Catholics tend to become polarised and argumentative (in part due to a lack of catechesis), therefore YCA has decided to adopt a positive and charitable ethos based on orthodox Catholic teaching. Our role models are St. John Vianney, the English Martyrs and St. Francis de Salle. Also, it was felt that YCA could provide a more contemplative sprituality than other younger Christian groups around at the moment.
